Watchable..engaging plots November 23, 2008 Alice L. Moore (midlothian, va United States) This "Dark Angel" DVD set was part of an excellent twofer bargain with "Dark Shadows"Dark Shadows The Revival - The Complete Series. The complete set was 19.99 at Target. The show had an intriguing premise. A product of genetic engineering, Max, is on the run from the government. She and eleven others escaped when they were children. All were separated and either are dead or in hiding, like Max(Jessica Alba). The plot thread that runs through this series is seeking out those others and avoiding the government at the same time. Another interesting twist is that she must make a living and interact with others. She also does a Good Deed of the Week; hence the title. The show is set in 2019. The US is recovering from an ElectroMagnetic Pulse. It fried the USA to third world status. This seems to make it easier for Max to avoid the Feds. One of the problems I have with the show; it is not dystopic enough. Everyone seems to have the living standard of a 20 year old college student with a part time job. There are no public health problems, girls can get their hair done and everyone seems to have a mountain bike. Max seems sane and good looking even though animal DNA was used in her conception. Her virtue seems to come without effort. When compared to "Firefly"Firefly - The Complete Seriesit seems too good to be true for someone with such a harsh early life. The character of River Tam is much more likely than supergirl Max in those circumstances. I had trouble suspending disbelief because, I had seen "FireFly" before this series. The positive points of this series was the character development of Max, the Computer Guy and Reagan Ronald, her employer. His Ponies on their bikes seem to better than the US Postal Service. My two sons, 23 and 26, liked Jessica Alba. As mentioned in the beginning, this is a great value with "Dark Shadows-The Revival" twofer set.
Dark Angel - Season 1 August 27, 2008 Bondgirl22 (Australia) Due to my mistake I purchased this DVD believing that I would be able to view it on my DVD Player which wasn't the case due to Region Codes. Apart from that I received the products quickly, they were cheap and it was nice to re-watch Dark Angel as I was a fan when it was on tv.
Loved the series - my comments are about which set to purchase April 27, 2008 J. Murphy (California) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Amazon has the complete first season DVDs listed twice, once for $28 and once for $36, and the only difference between the two items seems to be the picture on the front. The second season is also listed twice, for $28 or $40. However, the complete series is listed for $45. I just received my order, and it really does contain each set of season disks. I recommend getting "Dark Angel - The Complete Series" unless, for whatever reason, you're interested in only one season.
Most Excellent # 1 April 23, 2008 Steven Epley (Corpus Christi) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Season one is my favorite of the two seasons. The casting is superb and the characters believable. Jessica Alba is awesome as Max.
One of the best! April 16, 2008 Ruki the Drunken Master (Fremont, California) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I admit: I originally watched the series on TV because I was more interested in watching Jessica Alba than anything else. But I found myself very much getting into the show in and of itself. So much so that my favorite character turned out to not be Jessica Alba's, but the Republican messenger service owner named Reagan Ronald ('Normal' for short) played by J.C. MacKenzie. C'mon people! BIP! BIP! BIP! (You'll just have to watch it to know what that last line is about) Please note that there are major differences between season one and season two. The producers and creative people of season 2 basically ripped out what was working so well with season 1 and tried more campy sci-fi instead. This is important: Because if you watch this season you'll be hooked and begging for more, much like those who watch Firefly are. But when you see season two -- despite some good 'character' episodes -- you'll be quite disappointed. When season two aired live, I stopped watching it after about four episodes -- no matter how hot Alba was -- I was THAT ticked off. Later, watching the DVD's straight through gave me more context and so I am not so critical of it now. Ironically enough, it was because of Firefly that a season three of Dark Angel never happened. That and its huge drop in ratings. FOX just can't handle SciFi very well. And yes, I thought this kicked Buffy's butt. If you Buffy fans out there take offense over that -- too bad. :)
