Before Nicole Richie became a mommy and prior to Paris Hilton's brief but well-publicized incarceration, there was the fifth season of The Simple Life. In the 10 episodes that aired from May to August 2007, the former frenemies are again best friends forever and wreaking havoc in a summer camp-type situation. Because this is a reality series (wink, wink), the high-maintenance blondes are placed in fish-out-of-water scenarios that poke a little fun at themselves, but mostly mocks the real "simple" people they're trying to fit in with (at least on camera). Though the show is called The Simple Life, Hilton and Richie go out of their way to complicate matters. When they help run a fat camp, the rail-thin ditzes sabotage their clients' weight loss goals by taking them out for junk food. They teach young pageant girls how to flip the bird. And we won't even get into the anatomy lessons. But none of that is as repugnant as when Hilton coaches an 11-year-old would-be Lothario to pick up women... using a six-year-old girl as bait. There are plenty of actresses who aren't particularly good thespians, but they have a likable presence that makes them pleasant to watch on the screen. There is none of that here: Neither Richie or Hilton are good enough actors to make the viewer believe that any of this is real. And neither is interesting enough to make us forget that there really isn't a good reason to watch them do anything, especially when their humor is based on making fun of everyone who isn't them. That's not hot. --Jae-Ha Kim

2 out of 5 stars eh !   October 16, 2008

Well i'm not sure whether to give it a 2 or 3 out of five ! It's not reality TV. They're faking every single scene. It's all acting and Paris Hilton gets on my nerves. She's so not funny, doesn't know how to act. I like Nicole more, it is very clear that she has more character and she's funnier. If you're dead bored and you want to watch gorgeous girls wearing designer clothing and handbags, then watch this one. It kinda passes time for ya if you have a lot with nothing to do.

3 out of 5 stars Stupid is...   August 22, 2008

...as stupid does. Of course I have no idea if these girls are truly dumb, but if I had to base my opinion on these movies I'd have to say 'yes'. That being said, the series is pretty entertaining. I find amazing the way these girls treat people, the people who open up their homes to them and just folk in general. They act like teen age kids who have had no direction or parental influence in their lives. Just because you are extremely well to do does not mean that you should not have basic manners or social skills. I understand that this series is meant as entertainment and not really a look at the girls 'real' lives, but it sure serves as a clue what those lives must be like. And hey, if I inherited a ton of money, who's to say I wouldn't become just as irresponsible? I will note that in the later series, the girls often gifted the families they stayed with with some pretty nice stuff, so I suppose all is not lost. So, 3 stars for entertainment, -2 for embarrassment suffered while watching.

3 out of 5 stars Not so interesting this time.   May 18, 2008

I have every season of The Simple Life and I have enjoyed the first seasons until season 4, when Paris and Nicole had their feud. But even though they didn't work together the season was fine. So now that they got together again to make season 5, I thought that the show was going to be really funny. But I really found it not so funny. This time they go to camp and there are not really fun scenes. I think that one of reasons can be, that they are in another stage of their lifes. I mean they are in their late 20's so making stupid things (Let's be honest. The show was fun because they were always making stupid things. Funny but stupid) is not so funny any more. And the other I think, was that there was nothing exciting in the stories that they made for this season.
I heard that season 5 is the closing season of the series. I think that it wasn't a good idea to end a show that had had success without closing it big.
Finally I must say that the DVD production is not good at all. It doesn't have special features. You can only find the usual DVD enhancements such as scene seletions or subtitles (this one includes subtitles in English, Spanish and French).
If you are a follower of the show, buy this one but if you want to buy a season for any reason. Try the first three seasons (the best ones for me are season 2 and 3).

5 out of 5 stars Simple Life Goes To Camp Review   April 28, 2008

Product arrived in timely manner and was in excellent/new condition. Great addition to my Simple Life DVD collection, and would be great for anyone who likes a laugh! You don't have to be a Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie fan to watch the Simple Life, and it's fun to watch over and over again a great buy from Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Is this the end?   April 8, 2008

With the completely noticable scriptedness of Season 5, (the band that is supposedly Hunter's friends that he hires in the Season finale to woo Paris is the same band that Nichole uses for the little boys birthday party in Season 4- now I highly doubt that is a coincidence) the Simple Life still delivers laughs. Although not the strongest Season, it definately makes up for Season 4. But maybe it's time to call it quits girls. We love you, but you just aren't as funny scripted.
